Japanese Paintings from East to West: Taikan, Shunsō, Shōen and more
April 03 (Saturday),2021~September 26 (Sunday),2021
Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958), a master hand of Mt. Fuji paintings, Uemura Shōen (1875-1949) and Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1972), who devoted themselves to beauty portraits (bijin-ga), and Murakami Kagaku (1888-1939), who created numerous paintings of Kannon (the goddess of mercy). Over the course of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras, these artists sought new forms of expression between tradition and innovation, creating vibrant and captivating works of art.
This exhibition presents Japanese paintings from East to West, with a focus on painters from Tokyo and Kyoto, bringing together some of the finest works of the Okada Museum of Art collection. These include Taikan's masterpiece "Mt. Fuji", Shōen’s most famous beauty portrait “Shiokumi Japanese Dance”, Hayami Gyoshū’s suiboku-ga ink painting masterpiece "Magnolia (Noble Flowers in Spring Garden)." In addition, all seven works of Hishida Shunsō, who died at the young age of 36, will be on display in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of his death. We invite you to enjoy his delicate and pure world of painting.
It is our pleasure to offer our visitors the chance to feel the breath of a new era through the works of the Japanese painters from East to West.
