Jakuchū and Isson Transcending Time
December 25th (Sunday),2022~June 4th (Sunday),2023
In celebration of its 10th anniversary in the fall of 2023, the Okada Museum of Art has selected four artists who have been especially popular in past exhibitions, and will be holding an exhibition in two parts, featuring two artists each.
Part 1 features Itō Jakuchū of the Edo period and Tanaka Isson of the Showa period. The popularity of both artists has skyrocketed in recent years. These two artists, who remained single throughout their lives and made painting their only purpose in life, have similarities between their styles, including thorough sketching, elegant coloring, and an air of tension that permeates their paintings. Tadashi Kobayashi, the director of the museum, refers to Isson as the "Jakuchū of the Showa period" for his lifestyle and entire body of work.
In this exhibition, from Jakuchū's colored paintings, energetically painted from his late 30s to 40s, and masterpieces from Isson's time living on the island of Amami Ōshima, we'll exhibit various combinations of paintings by these two artists, with themes such as ink paintings and paintings depicting the same kind of bird. We hope you enjoy the wide variety of the nearly 40 exhibits, which include 7 pieces by Jakuchū and 7 by Isson, as well as work by related artists and traditional flower-and-bird paintings on folding screens.
*Jakuchū's Rooster in Snow will be on display from March 10th to June 4th. Two of Isson's pieces are from a private collection, and the rest are part of the museum's collection.
To say thank you for 10 years, we have a special pair of invitations for your birthday!
